Helping Victims Find Their Voices
For years, Amy promised to walk away. But her lack of income and fear of losing custody of her children was so great, she never did. Ashamed of talking about it with her family and friends, she continued to live in fear until the day came when everyone found out the truth. As the preacher gave the last words to her eulogy, he acknowledged that Amy had finally found what she had spent so many years searching for…..peace.
Domestic abuse is all around us. The victims are there. The problem is real. It comes in many forms. It often goes unnoticed because of fear, shame and indifference. And if the silence lasts long enough, the outcome can be a horrifying and lingering experience for the victim, family, and the community.
For years, Sarah’s Refuge, Inc., a domestic violence and rape crisis center, has been a beacon of light for those willing to risk everything in order to seek a better life by providing counseling, emergency housing, and other resources needed to break free from abuse.
In response to the call to increase awareness of abuse, Sarah's Refuge is joining forces with victims and local writers to spread the word that abuse can be eliminated step by step with community involvement. The featured memoir, which will be titled, “VOICES OF SURVIVORS: Breaking the Silence”, will give survivors and families an avenue in which to share their lives in a way that will encourage readers to deal with their own personal experiences more effectively, and even more, help others to see the seriousness of this growing epidemic. The book will also include motivational words of wisdom to inspire victims or would be victims to strengthen their resolve and willpower to move towards a better life.
If you are a writer or survivor of abuse or know of anyone who would like to be a part of this project, please contact Sarah's Refuge, Inc. at 910-293-3206 or send an email to sarahsrefuge@centurylink.net. Submissions of poetry, essays, and short stories are now being accepted. Submissions should be no longer than two and a half pages single spaced. Further criteria, including ways in which to submit anonymous works, will be supplied once submitted manuscripts have been reviewed for acceptance.
